REPORTING WORK

Packages from my senior broadcast capstone

UNL Food Scientist Competition

Here is a package I put together on an event at UNL put on by the Food Science and Technology Department. This was the first package I had done since my time at KLKN-TV in the summer, so I felt a little rusty. Thankfully, I soon felt like I was riding a bicycle again. I made sure to white balance as best as I could, make sure my subjects were in focus, and have a wide variety of sources to showcase diverse perspectives. Overall, this was a fun event to cover and it was interesting to see the creative ways the department choose to incorporate learning into a fun challenge.

Shave for the Brave, Childhood Cancer Research Fundraiser

This video package was on the Shave for the Brave fundraiser. The event raised funds for childhood cancer research through shaving heads and hosting an auction. All the money raised by the UNL National Residence Hall Honorary go to support St. Baldricks, which is a national charity. When researching for this story, I found some other organizations that have hosted Shave for the Brave fundraisers across the nation. I saw how other news outlets have reported on them and was inspired by one woman who did her live shot interviewing someone getting their head shaved. When you watch my story, you will see that I also interviewed one of the volunteers while he was getting his head shaved. In this story, I tried to incorporate a lot of close-up shots to showcase the volunteer shavees reactions. One problem I ran into was lighting for this story. Knowing it now, I should have brought a light with me because the room was a little dim with harsh lights in some areas. Overall, I am proud of how this story turned out. I think the reactions of the shavees really make this story fun and heartwarming, knowing that they're shaving their heads for a good cause.

Green Career Week

This package focuses on the nationwide effort, known as Green Career Week, created by the Seed Your Future organization. This was my second story of the semester and I remember struggling to find something to cover during this time. Once I heard how the UNL College of Agricultural Sciences and National Resources was helping local high school kids learn about opportunities in their career field, I figured it could be a very visual story. To my surprise, the college met with one of the high school clubs in a classroom and I had to get creative with some of my camera shots. Thankfully as time went on, the students began working on an activity and were able to show me some other projects they had in progress. To explain what the activity was they were working on, I decided it'd be interesting to tell the audience what it was in my stand-up. Overall, I don't believe this was my best story, but I felt that I was able to pivot with my original idea to adjust to what I was seeing and hearing.
